Greatest Cricketer Ever?

The club was originally a member of the Durham Coast League where they won seven championships in their last nine seasons including an extraordinary triumph in 1997 when they won just five of their 24 matches - only two more than Seaham Park who were second from bottom. The most successful player during this period was captain Bobby Steel who had 12500 league runs to his name with an average of 45 for South Hetton. He exceeded 700 runs in each of his 15 seasons and hit 23 league centuries. South Hetton were elected to the Durham Senior league in 2002 which was seen as remarkable, by some, given their social circumstances. The lack of a qualified groundsmen led to men such as William Bennett spending hours rolling the wicket and tending the ground just to ensure that it was playable.
